Meet the Team Behind the Screen: Megan Serio, Academic Advisor

Behind every online program at the Â鶹ҹÊÐ is a team of enrollment specialists, academic advisors, program coordinators, and other faculty and staff who work hard to create engaging and positive experiences for online learners.
Megan Serio, academic advisor for the RN to BSN and Health Services Administration online bachelor's programs, is among the dedicated faculty and staff supporting online students. As an academic advisor, she guides students through their curriculums by reviewing their transfer credits, recommending courses, monitoring their degree progress, and answering questions along the way.
Learn more about Megan through the Q&A below.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
Megan: I get to evaluate transcripts during the admissions process for our programs. I love seeing all the courses applicants have taken and career changes they may have made before they got here. It's like an archive of students' academic histories.
What advice would you give to a student in their first semester of an online program?
Megan: Time management is your best friend. Carve out time for assignments and studying, and be familiar with important dates and deadlines, for both your courses and the university. But more importantly, we know you have work and a personal life to balance along with school, so make sure you're comfortable with your courseload and try not to push yourself too hard.
What is the most common question you get from online students?
Megan: "What classes should I take?" This is highly nuanced question!
There aren't fixed course plans for either of the programs I advise, so as long as you make note of prerequisite courses, there's no right or wrong way to schedule your classes. As an advisor, I can provide course recommendations and map out a tentative degree plan, but at the end of the day, the courses you register for and how many you take per semester is up to you. You're driving the car — I'm just the GPS system.
What is your favorite restaurant & thing to do in Lafayette?
Megan: I really like Antoni’s Italian Cafe. I enjoy browsing the farmer’s market at Moncus Park on Saturday mornings and attending ArtWalk in Downtown Lafayette on the second Saturday of every month.
